Prototyping
Smashing Magazine has an excellent article on prototyping that is a must read. In the time you can write a thorough requirements document you can often build at least a lo-fi prototype. The prototype communicates requirements far better than pages of words, and has the added benefit of validating the idea and the user flows. We're fans of prototyping.
